LEAPS

Lead to Encourage Activities Participation & Sports

We launched our club on the 28th July 2007 at Glenholme Leisure Centre in Crook where our Guest of Honour was Stephen Miller, paralympian.

LEAPS, is a new club, which aims to provide sports & activities for people of mixed abilities within the Wear Valley area. If you would like to get involved with these activities, enjoy socialising and meeting new friends then why not come along today and see if LEAPS is the group for you!

We now have New Age Kurling on fortnightly at the Wolsingham Community Sports Centre, at a cost of £2 per person.

Membership of LEAPS is also available to help towards the funding of some of the activities.

Those under 16 must be supervised by parent or guardian.

At present we are planning for activities for the year ahead, depending on funding available. We hope to go fishing again, and possibly sailing among other activities.

Current Activities

Ten Pin Bowling
This takes place at the Kascada Bowl in Durham.
We try to go there at least once a month and it is well attended, we usually go for a meal afterwards.

New Age Kurling

Oct-April: Sunday, 2pm-4pm
May-Sept: Wednesday, 6pm-8pm

New Age Kurling is an up and coming sport, played throughout the UK and Europe, similar to the sport of Ice Curling, except this is played indoors with no Ice! Why not come along to our regular new age kurling sessions every fortnight at the community sports centre in Wolsingham and have a go at a sport that can be played by anyone.
We charge £2 per person which includes refreshments.

Previous Activities

Archery
We tried archery on the 18th November 2007; this took place at Gilesgate School.
12 leaps members were in attendance, we all had a good time and look forward to doing it again.

Fishing
Leaps members have also tried catching there supper by the lake at Get Hooked Fishing, Witton Le Wear.

One member who is blind caught the largest of them all which could have fed a few of us, but at this place you have to throw the fish back.

Calvert Trust weekend (9th - 11th May 2008)
This weekend was attended by 20 members & there carers, we tried sailing, archery, king swing (a giant rope swing) and problem solving, where we worked as groups to figure out giant puzzles, which brought us together as a team.

We were even blind folded, and put into buddies, so we had to communicate to find each other by our voice. Most of us thoroughly enjoyed it and the weekend gave everyone a chance to try something they would not normally get to do, it encouraged us to work as one and built up our confidence, it was a fantastic weekend.

All these activities above were funded by 'Awards for All' and a bursary grant from Calvert as well.
